   The village you're entering is literally called Gianaclis (70km south of Alexandria on the Cairo-Alex Desert Road), named after the Greek tobacco merchant who arrived in 1864 with nothing but ambition. Nestor Gianaclis built the Egyptian cigarette empire, then spent 18 years searching for the right soil before planting his first vine here in 1882. The winery sign marks not just a business, but a man's obsession that became a village name.

   These French oak barrels age Château de Grandville — Gianaclis's premium red described as 'deep, intense and complex' — in a room that represents 1,200 years of silence finally broken. Inside the winery facility, past the stainless steel towers, French winemaker Sébastien Boudry's barrel room tells the story: Arab conquest ended commercial winemaking in the 7th century AD, then Gianaclis revived it, Nasser nationalized it, Heineken rebuilt it. Touch a barrel and ask about Muscat of Alexandria — Cleopatra's grape that they're attempting to bring back.

   The Mareotic wine from this region was so famous in the ancient world that Horace wrote a victory poem about defeating Egypt — and used Cleopatra's taste for this exact wine as the insult.

   After Rome conquered Egypt, Horace mocked Cleopatra as 'the foreign queen whose mind was blinded by Mareoticum' — using her love of this region's wine as the ultimate insult. In the tasting room with its brown brick walls and massive iron chandelier, pour the Cru des Ptolémées (Pinot Blanc, named for her dynasty) or the Beausoleil made from Bannati — an indigenous Egyptian grape that won silver in Brussels. The Romans who conquered this place also drank its wine.

   The Saturday tour costs 300-350 EGP (€6-7) and includes VIP bus pickup from central Cairo at 9AM, full guided tour, tasting, and BBQ lunch with paired wines.
