   Ride the Jonkershoek Single Track

   Jonkershoek is a mountain biker's paradise. Bermed corners, bridges, technical sections, and double-black drops. The trails are managed by MTO Forestry - everything from beginner-friendly 10km loops to advanced single-track. The scenery is spectacular: towering mountains, indigenous fynbos, and the Cape Floral Kingdom that defines the terroir of Stellenbosch wine. You're riding through the same ecosystem that makes the wines taste the way they do. Ancient soils, mineral-rich, shaped by fire and drought. Download the myMTO App to purchase permits online and access trail maps. Day permit roughly R100-150. Summer gets very hot - ride early. Winter can be wet and cold, with snow on the peaks. Bring water, snacks, and a repair kit. The trails are technical. Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, 9km from Stellenbosch on Jonkershoek Valley Road. If Jonkershoek is too advanced, the Coetzenburg and Eden/Paradyskloof trails in Stellenbosch are more accessible and still gorgeous. Many run through wine farms and fynbos.

   Ride Coetzenburg to Banhoek Valley Wine Route

   Flow single track through vineyards and proteas descending all the way to Banhoek. The majestic Drakenstein and Jonkershoek Mountains in the background. Wine farms tucked away at the end of the valley - some offer tastings if you stop. The trails are close to 100% single track, running over wine farms, fynbos, and forests. Banhoek Conservancy trails require a permit: R100 day pass, R1000 annual. Book a guided tour with Ride and Guide Tours, Bikes n Wines, or Cape Vélo. They provide bikes, permits, guides, and often include a wine tasting stop at one of the estates. If riding solo, get the Stellenbosch bike map - available online or at the tourism office - and purchase permits in advance. Start at Coetzenburg - Stellenbosch University sports grounds - and ride through the Banhoek Valley. Several operators offer half-day or full-day mountain bike plus wine tasting combo tours. This is the easiest way to experience both without worrying about logistics, permits, or drinking and riding.

   Understand Fynbos as Terroir

   Stop your bike. Look around. That spiky, scrubby vegetation is fynbos. The Cape Floral Kingdom is one of only 6 floral kingdoms on the planet. Smaller than Portugal but containing 9,600+ plant species. The ancient soils - 540 million years old in places - are nutrient-poor. Vines dig deep and struggle. That struggle creates minerality, complexity, and character. Notice the proteas. Notice the burnt patches - fynbos NEEDS fire to regenerate. The vines grow in this. They drink the same water. They breathe the same air. When you taste Stellenbosch wine later, remember this landscape. The minerality you taste? This is where it comes from.
