Stellenbosch is the second-oldest European settlement in South Africa - founded 1679. That's 345+ years of history, much of it dark. The most famous ghost is 'Die Moeder' (The Mother) who walks Church Street.
But the real story is the VOC-era buildings you'll visit - some of the oldest structures in the country, built by enslaved labor, witness to corruption scandals (Adam Tas!), smallpox epidemics, and colonial violence. Listen for specific stories about VOC commanders, Khoisan conflicts, and the 1713 smallpox epidemic that killed 90% of the indigenous population.
Stellenbosch Ghost Walk runs Fridays and Saturdays, starting 5:30pm winter / 6:30pm summer, R150 per person. Book ahead via Stellenbosch on Foot. The walk takes you through different parts of town, showing buildings tourists never see.
If fully booked, do a self-guided evening walk down Dorp Street. Many buildings have year plaques (1700s). The atmosphere at dusk - oak-lined streets, whitewashed gables, shadows - is genuinely eerie.
