Both were called 'Cape Smoke' in English—and drinking it feels like inhaling fire. Home distilling was illegal from 1924 until 2007, forcing production underground for 83 years. Along Route 62 between Montagu and Calitzdorp, look for farm stalls and distilleries advertising mampoer or witblits. Kingna Distillery (18km outside Montagu) and roadside stalls near Barrydale are good bets. Ask to taste both witblits (grape) and mampoer (fruit). Start with SMALL sips. Notice the clean burn, the fruit or grape intensity, the heat. If dedicated distilleries are hard to find, roadside farm stalls sell bottled versions.    In 1924, the KWV obtained a state monopoly on brandy production. Three THOUSAND farm stills were operating across South Africa—the authorities effectively banned private distillation overnight. But farmers didn't stop. They went underground. Mampoer makers were allowed to continue IF they registered, obtained a license, and only consumed it themselves (no selling). The Kultuur Stokers Gilde was founded in 1982 to preserve distilling knowledge. Licenses passed from father to son. The term 'Bolandse Kookwater' (Boland's Cooking Water) was code for bootleg brandy. Home distilling was finally legalized in 2007—ending 83 years of prohibition. At any distillery or farm stall, ask about the prohibition era. Many have family stories of hidden stills, licenses passed down, and the cat-and-mouse game with authorities. Ask what 'Bolandse Kookwater' means—if they laugh, they know the history. Mampoer bottle labels often include historical notes about the tradition and the KWV monopoly era.

Mampoer is distilled from stone fruit (peaches, apricots) or wild fruit—it's sweeter, fruitier, more aromatic. Both are typically unaged (no wood contact), so the base ingredient flavor is intense. Taste witblits first. Notice the clean burn, the faint grape character. Then taste peach or apricot mampoer. The fruit is unmistakable. Ask the distiller about fermentation methods and distillation temperatures—craft producers are obsessive about preserving fruit character. If formal tastings aren't available, buy small bottles to compare at your accommodation. Sip slowly with water on the side.

   Since 2007 legalization, some farms openly advertise their stills. These are often tiny operations—a copper pot still in a barn, a family recipe passed down 4 generations. Drive Route 62 slowly, especially near Montagu, Barrydale, and between Calitzdorp and Oudtshoorn. Look for hand-painted signs saying 'Mampoer,' 'Witblits,' or 'Brandewyn.' Kingna Distillery near Montagu is one of the more established stops, but the real treasures are the unmarked farms where you knock on the door and ask if they're selling. Stop at any roadside farm stall and ask: 'Is daar iemand hier wat mampoer maak?' (Is there anyone here who makes mampoer?). Locals will point you to nearby farms. Be respectful, buy a bottle if you taste. Kingna Distillery (GPS: -33.7797, 20.0923, 18km from Montagu on the R62) is a formal, welcoming operation with tours.
