   Exit the Ritz and walk the octagonal Place Vendome. The shape inspired the stopper of Chanel N°5 (1921). The Vendome Column was made from 1,200 cannons captured at Austerlitz. Chanel looked at this view every day for 34 years from her window.

   Book afternoon tea at Salon Proust inside the Ritz (from €75, reserve at ritzparis.com). They serve champagne alongside pastries in the room named for Marcel Proust, another Ritz regular. Chanel died January 10, 1971, a Sunday, in her suite - still dressed in her signature style.
