   Taste the Grape That Survived a King's Bonfire

   Fetească Neagră ("Black Maiden") — Romania's 2,000-year-old indigenous red grape SURVIVED King Burebista burning every vineyard in Dacia (~60 BC) to stop Roman invasions attracted by Dacian wine's fame. It hid in wild populations for 166 years until Trajan conquered in 106 AD and Romans replanted. At SERVE Winery (Ceptura 125 C, book ahead: 0723627535 or gnicolae@serve.ro, 9am-6pm), order single-varietal Fetească Neagră and smell first: blackcurrant, black olives, mocha, cloves. Ask sommelier: "Is this from old vines?" — pre-war plantings are most concentrated.

   Find the Corsican Count Who Bet on 1994 Romania

   In 1994, Romania was 5 years out of communism with a shattered economy and collapsed wine industry. And a CORSICAN COUNT (Guy Tyrel de Poix) and his wife Mihaela founded SERVE — the FIRST private winery in post-communist Romania. Find the founding plaque or photo at SERVE Winery entrance (usually near entrance or tasting room), note the date: 1994, and ask staff: "Is the Count still involved?" (He and Mihaela still own it.) This wasn't wine tourism — it was a belief in terroir SO STRONG you ignore geopolitics.

   🔄 BACKUP: If no plaques visible, ask staff directly: "Can you tell me the founding story?" They'll know it by heart — it's their identity.

   Walk the 45th Parallel

   You're standing on the SAME LATITUDE as Bordeaux and Tuscany — the 45th parallel creates the EXACT microclimate: clay-loam soils, calcareous substrates, excellent drainage, moderate temperatures. Romans knew this and planted here after 106 AD because the terroir MATCHED Italy. At any Dealu Mare vineyard (SERVE has vineyard walks; Budureasca too), stand facing south toward the hills, dig fingers into the clay-limestone soil mix, and ask your guide: "How does our clay compare to Bordeaux?"

   Hunt the Piero Antinori Investment

   Piero Antinori — THE Tuscan wine royalty whose family has made wine since 1385 (26 GENERATIONS) and owns Tignanello, Solaia, Ornellaia — invested 100 hectares in Dealu Mare in the early 2000s (Viile Metamorfosis). When an 800-year Italian dynasty plants in Romania, it's not a hobby — it's a terroir DECLARATION. If visiting Metamorfosis, ask for their flagship wine and inquire about Antinori's involvement. If at SERVE/Budureasca, ask staff "Do you know about the Antinori investment in Dealu Mare?"
