   Find the Levada Entry

   The Levada do Norte crosses through vineyard country at 540m elevation. Find the start point.

   Take bus 96 from Funchal to Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. Get off at "Levada do Norte" stop (600m AFTER the church). Or take a taxi. Look for the concrete water channel - the levada - at the roadside. The walking path runs alongside it. Alternatively, start from the village and walk uphill until you hit the levada.

   Walk 2km Through the Vineyards

   Follow the levada through pergola-trained vines on both sides - the heart of Madeira wine.

   From the Levada do Norte entry point, walk east (toward Funchal direction). The first 2km passes through the densest vineyard area. Vines are trained on pergolas (latadas) above your head. The path is flat and easy. Best season: late autumn when leaves turn copper-red. Water flows beside you - these levadas have irrigated vineyards for 500+ years.

   Spot the Four Noble Grapes

   All four noble Madeira grapes grow here: Sercial, Verdelho, Boal, Malmsey. Find them.

   Look for hand-painted signs on vineyard gates - farmers sometimes label their grapes. If you see someone working, ask "Que casta é esta?" (What variety is this?). Malmsey (Malvasia) has larger, rounder leaves; Sercial has smaller, more pointed leaves. You may not identify all four, but trying teaches you to see vineyards differently.

   Count the Hand-Built Terraces

   These poios (terraces) were carved by hand into volcanic rock over centuries. How many levels?

   Find a viewpoint overlooking the valley (several along the levada path). Count the visible terrace levels on one slope - some have 50+ walls. Each wall was built by hand: dig volcanic soil, stack stones, create flat planting areas. Slaves and peasants built this system over 500 years. You're walking on their labor.

   Continue to the Cabo Girão Skywalk

   Extend your walk 3km west to Europe's highest sea cliff (580m) with a glass-floor skywalk.

   From the vineyard section, continue west on Levada do Norte toward Cabo Girão (about 3km more, 1.5 hours). The skywalk is free but the café at the top sells drinks (€3-5). The glass floor lets you look straight down 580m to the sea. Return by bus 7 from Cabo Girão to Funchal (Mon-Sat 13:00 and 18:00) or taxi (~€15).

   Some farmers sell homemade wine from hand-painted signs. Find one and taste.

   Walk slowly and look for hand-painted "VINHO" signs outside farmhouse gates. These are farmers selling homemade Madeira-style wines - not aged, not certified, just honest grape-to-glass. €5-10 per bottle. Quality varies wildly. Ask to taste before buying. This is what Madeira tasted like before it became famous.
