Pull off at the unmarked lay-by on the south side of the historic stone bridge (2km south of Gibbston Valley Winery on State Highway 6) and walk 50 meters to the fence line. The view opens onto the entire Gibbston sub-region with the Remarkables mountains as backdrop.

   🔄 BACKUP: If weather is poor, the pub in Arrowtown (15km away) has the same mountain views and Gibbston Valley wines on draft.

   The wine cave is carved into the schist hillside for natural temperature control that remains constant year-round — essential for aging Pinot Noir in a region with 25°C daily temperature swings. Book the cave tour (~$20-30 NZD) at Gibbston Valley Winery main building (45 Mine Road, Gibbston). You'll descend into the schist cavity where barrels age at 12-14°C naturally — touch the walls to feel this ancient rock where Gibbston's mineral terroir originates.

   The Gibbston Wine Trail is a 3km dedicated cycling path connecting 4+ wineries along the Kawarau River, staying at altitude with constant views of the Remarkables mountains. Rent bikes at any winery in Gibbston village (Peregrine, Gibbston Valley, Chard Farm — typically $15-25 NZD per day). The trail is mostly flat and sign-posted; cycle to 3-4 wineries stopping for tastings ($5-10 tasting fees). Allow 4-5 hours including tastings and lunch breaks.
