   Find the Demijohn Wall That Saved a Dying Wine

   Niepoort is the only house on the planet still making Garrafeira Port. Nearly 200 hand-blown demijohns line one entire wall of this cellar.

   One entire wall lined with nearly 200 hand-blown glass demijohns holds the world's last surviving Garrafeira Port — vintages from 1931, 1933, 1938, 1940, 1948, 1950, 1952, 1967, 1977, 1983, 1987. Niepoort's great-great-grandfather Eduard Karel Jacob bought 4,000 antique apothecary vessels made in Flensburg around 1780. Every other Port house gave up this style requiring 4–8 years in wood, then minimum 15 years in glass.    Count the Cobwebs on 1,000 Barrels of Aging Port

   Over 1,000 barrels. A 100-year-old cellar. Cobwebs they haven't touched in decades.

   Niepoort does not clean the cobwebs — 'cobwebs on top of cobwebs' blanket 1,000+ barrels of aging Port in their main barrel hall. While hundreds of tourists shuffle past Taylor's next door with audioguides, you might be one of six people here (maximum 24 guests per day). Stop walking in the barrel hall (Rua de Serpa Pinto 278, included in every tour), breathe the cellar air, find the oldest barrel and put your hand on the wood. Ask your guide: 'Which barrel is the oldest still in active use?'

   Taste the Wine Critics Called Undrinkable

   In 1990, Dirk Niepoort made a Douro red. Critics declared it 'unfit to drink.' He was 26. Three decades later he's in the Decanter Hall of Fame.

   In 1990, Dirk made 'Robustus,' the first dry red wine seriously attempted in the Douro. Critics declared it 'unfit to drink.' In 2023 he became the 40th person inducted into the Decanter Hall of Fame. At the tasting table in the Treasure Room during Niepoortland or Naturally Cool Tasting (€45), ask to taste Batuta (~€120, 70–100 year old vines on schist at 750m) or Charme (~€85–94, saignée of foot-trodden grapes, inspired by DRC La Tâche) — wines that vindicated his vision three decades later.

   Drink the 1-Liter Rebel Wine for €20

   Dirk hates the natural wine movement. So he invented his own version. 1-liter bottle, €20, from a grape that normally needs 10 years.

   Nat'Cool Bairrada Tinto comes in a 1-liter bottle because Dirk wanted it to feel like beer. Made from Baga vines 40–100 years old, harvested early for 11% alcohol, fresh and joyful. €20 at the Naturally Cool Tasting, cellar shop, or most Porto wine shops along the Ribeira. Dirk's instruction: 'I don't like natural wines because they taste of who made them. I want to taste terroir.' His rebel wine proves the point — drink it fast, with people, without ceremony.

   13 bottles of 1863 Port are in this cellar. One sold at Sotheby's for US$134,000 — Guinness World Record.

   Franciscus Marius Niepoort stored the 1863 vintage here, his grandson transferred it into glass demijohns in 1905, and now 13 bottles remain — not for sale, just sitting with cobwebs, 163 years old. A bottle in a Lalique decanter sold for HK$1.054 million (US$134,000) at Sotheby's Hong Kong. Access the inner cellar on Niepoort Temple program (~€45), ask your guide to show the 1863 stocks, then taste the Garrafeira 1987 that IS available — same demijohns, same method, same reverence for time.
