   Graham's basement holds over 3,500 casks of aging port, some dating back to 1868. The original Riga pine roof beams and cast-iron pillars from 1890 are still overhead. Granite walls over half a metre thick keep the temperature constant.

   Book the Port Essentials tour at grahams-port.com (30 euros per person). You taste 4 wines: White Port Blend No 5, Six Grapes Reserve, Quinta dos Malvedos Vintage, and 30-Year-Old Tawny. The guide explains the Six Grapes code: 19th-century winemakers marked each barrel with 1-6 grape symbols to rate quality. Six grapes meant perfection.

   Learn How 27 Barrels of Debt Created a Port Empire

   In 1820, Scottish textile merchants William and John Graham accepted 27 barrels of port in payment of a bad debt. Their Glasgow office reprimanded them for taking wine instead of cash. The port proved absurdly easy to sell. They pivoted the entire business.

   The guided tour tells the full Graham founding story. Key facts: Andrew James Symington arrived from Scotland in 1882, his grandsons acquired Graham's in 1970. Now 10 Symington family members work in the company across 4th and 5th generations. Head winemaker Charles Symington started as "The Apprentice" in 1997.

   Taste Three Decades of Tawny Through a Family's Eyes

   The Cellar Master's Trilogy is three Single Harvest Tawnies bottled at their peak after decades in barrel: The Apprentice (1997, Charles's first year), The Artisan (1974), and The Master (1961). This is a once-in-a-lifetime tasting.

   Book the private Cellar Master's Trilogy at 350 euros per person. This includes a private cellar tour plus all three wines. The 1961 Master was released November 2024 and pays tribute to the master blenders. This sells out. Must pre-book weeks in advance.

   Drink Porto Tonico at the Restaurant That Overlooks the Barrel Cellar

   Vinum restaurant is directly adjacent to the lodge. The dining room looks through glass into the barrel cellar. The terrace overlooks Porto, the Douro, and Dom Luis I Bridge.

   Walk to Vinum restaurant next to the cellar. Order a Porto Tonico on the terrace - one part white port to two parts tonic, garnished with citrus. This is Portugal's answer to the Aperol Spritz. Open every day noon to midnight. Phone: +351 220 930 417. The atrium is described as one of Europe's most astoundingly beautiful dining views.

   Ride the Cable Car Over the Wine River

   The Teleferico de Gaia cable car rises from the riverside to Jardim do Morro in 5 minutes. Eight passengers per cabin. The upper station gives you the hilltop reveal - suddenly seeing the entire Douro panorama before walking to Graham's.

   Take the Teleferico de Gaia from Cais de Gaia (10 euros round trip, 7 euros one-way). Five minutes up, 8 passengers per cabin. At the top, walk to Graham's Lodge from Jardim do Morro. The approach from above gives you the full panorama of Porto, the Douro, and the lodge rooftops covered in angel's share fungus.
