   In the 13th century, a dragon called 'the basilisk' lived in caves at Castel San Gottardo hermitage above Mezzolombardo. When noble knight Firmian slayed it, the dragon's blood sprouted Teroldego vines on the alluvial plain below - the 'blood of the Dolomites.' Drive 30 minutes downhill from Madonna di Campiglio toward Mezzolombardo, stop at Castel San Gottardo overlook (GPS: Castel San Gottardo, Mezzocorona) and see the Rotaliana plain below - that's Campo Rotaliano, the ONLY 180-hectare patch where Teroldego achieves greatness. Romans planted it here 2000 years ago, and it fails everywhere else.

   In 1985, 19-year-old Elisabetta inherited vineyards when Teroldego was being UPROOTED for Pinot Grigio and Merlot. By 2000, she'd lost connection to her work despite becoming 'undisputed top producer of Teroldego.' Enter biodynamics (early 2000s): treating vineyards as living organisms, no synthetic chemicals, cosmic rhythms. Walk the vineyard rows bordering the winery (Via Emanuele De Varda area) and look for wildflowers, cover crops, biodiversity. Touch the soil - it's ALIVE, not compacted like industrial vineyards nearby. She SAVED Teroldego from extinction.
