   In Zermatt, find Petite Arvine wine - a grape that ONLY grows in Valais (Switzerland) and Valle d'Aosta (Italy), on opposite sides of the Matterhorn. Taste Swiss vs Italian versions to decode terroir.

   Petite Arvine is the mountain's signature grape — found in Valais (20,000 vignerons, 5000 hectares) and Valle d'Aosta (750 acres total). Buy a half-bottle (37.5cl) of Swiss Petite Arvine (CHF 18-25) at Vinum wine bar (Bahnhofstrasse 9) or any of the 20+ wine shops on Bahnhofstrasse in Zermatt. Swiss version: drier, higher acid, grapefruit/saline notes. Compare mentally to any Valle d'Aosta white you tasted in Cervinia — SAME grape, 10km apart, radically different wines due to limestone (Swiss) vs schist (Italian) soils.

   🔄 BACKUP: If Petite Arvine is unavailable, try Valais Fendant (Chasselas grape, Swiss staple, CHF 12-18). It won't teach you about cross-border terroir but it's what locals drink with raclette.

   At Matterhorn Glacier Paradise viewing platform (3,883m), look down at Valle d'Aosta and Valais vineyards. You can SEE the terroir divide: Italian vines cling to vertical slopes (30% gradients), Swiss vines spread on gentler Rhône valley floors.

Looking north: Valais's 5000 hectares stretch along the Rhône river valley in organized rows. This is the production scale difference: Valais makes 20x more wine than Valle d'Aosta. Count the terrace walls on the Italian side — every wall was built by hand to prevent erosion and trap sun. The Roman Via delle Gallie passed through that valley 2,000 years ago, carrying wine from Aosta to Gaul.
