Muri-Gries Monastery - 929 Years of Lagrein History

The monks at Muri-Gries documented Lagrein harvest dates in 1097 AD. That's 929 years of written records — longer than most French wine regions have existed. The historic vineyards grow within the monastery walls in Bolzano's Gries neighborhood. You taste the Klosteranger single-vineyard Riserva from those exact vines: brooding blackberry, violet hints, attractive bitterness. Patrizia and Daniela in the vinotheque explain how medieval records survived, what the monks knew about terroir before France invented the word. This is as close to pilgrimage as wine gets.
