   Stand in the Villa dei Misteri

   The most famous Dionysus wine cult frescoes in the ancient world.

   Enter Pompeii via Porta Marina (€18). Head directly to Villa dei Misteri - it's the farthest point but the most important. These frescoes depict the initiation into the cult of Dionysus (god of wine). Stand in the room with the red walls. People 2000 years ago stood exactly here, worshipping wine. Take a moment to feel that.

   Find a Thermopolium

   Ancient wine bars where Romans drank standing up.

   Walking back from Villa dei Misteri, look for L-shaped counters with circular holes. These are thermopolia - ancient fast-food/wine bars. The holes held terracotta jars (dolia) of wine, food, and garum (fish sauce). The most famous one is near the Regio V entrance. Stand at the counter. This is where ordinary Romans drank their wine.

   See the Mastroberardino Vineyards

   Modern vines growing in ancient Roman planting holes.

   Near the amphitheater (across from entrance), you'll see fenced vineyard plots. These are NOT open to tourists, but you CAN see them from the path. Mastroberardino planted Piedirosso and Sciascinoso grapes in the EXACT holes that held Roman vines 2000 years ago. Only 1,080 bottles of "Villa dei Misteri" wine are made each year. You can buy it at wine shops in Naples (~€100).

   Catch the Free Shuttle to Cantina del Vesuvio

   From ancient wine heritage to modern volcanic terroir.

   Exit at Porta Marina. The Cantina del Vesuvio shuttle leaves at noon and 2pm (book via email 3 days ahead: info@cantinadelvesuvio.it). The 30-minute ride takes you up the slopes of Vesuvius - the same volcano that buried Pompeii. You're about to drink "Lacryma Christi" from the same volcanic soil.
