   Find Bignor's Bacchus Mosaic

   A 4th-century mosaic floor depicts Bacchus (Roman god of wine) surrounded by vines — the villa owner was wealthy enough to import wine AND wealthy enough to declare it publicly. Bacchus mosaics meant "I drink Roman wine, therefore I'm Roman" — identity through wine put literally underfoot. At Bignor Roman Villa (near Pulborough, West Sussex, 6 miles from South Downs Way, entry £10-12), the Bacchus mosaic is in one of the main rooms, showing Bacchus with grapes surrounded by geometric vine patterns.

   🔄 BACKUP: If Bignor is closed, Fishbourne Roman Palace (Chichester) has wine vases in the Cupid mosaic - similar "wine = status" symbolism.

   Hike from Roman Villa to Modern Vineyard

   You're walking the SAME CHALK SLOPES the Romans cultivated, from Roman failure to 21st-century success. Bignor Villa had hypocausts, mosaics, and Bacchus imagery — they wanted wine desperately, but climate defeated them. This 8-10 mile hike along the South Downs Way from Bignor to Wiston Estate (4-5 hours, moderate difficulty) traces the timeline: Roman attempt → medieval abandonment → modern vindication. Wiston Estate is proof the Romans were right about the terroir, just 2,000 years too early.

   🔄 BACKUP: Drive Bignor → Wiston (15 min). Walk Wiston's grounds to feel the chalk underfoot. Same geology, different millennium.

   Toast at Chanctonbury Ring Iron Age Fort

   An Iron Age hill fort built BEFORE the Romans invaded, where Celts stood watching for Roman legions on the very slopes where Romans later planted vines that died, and where you now hold English sparkling wine made on the SAME CHALK. From Wiston Estate, hike 1.5 miles (moderate climb) to Chanctonbury Ring for 360° views of Sussex countryside, then open a bottle of Wiston sparkling and toast to 2,500 years of history: pre-Roman → Roman attempt → modern success.

   🔄 BACKUP: Drive to Chanctonbury Ring car park, shorter walk (1 mile). Or enjoy the view from Wiston's terrace with a glass - you can see the Ring from there.
