   The most controversial Alpine skiing victory in Olympic history. Poor visibility, February 17, 1968. Austrian Karl Schranz claimed a course patrolman crossed his path during slalom, causing him to stop. He got a restart. Posted the fastest time. Then the Jury of Appeal reviewed TV footage, declared Schranz had MISSED A GATE on the upper part of the first run, annulled his restart time, gave the gold to Killy. Schranz called it robbery. France called it justice. 56 years later, the debate still rages. Take Olympique gondola to Bellevarde summit in Val d'Isère (accessible via Olympique gondola from La Daille). Ski down the Olympic slalom run (marked). As you descend in ANY visibility, ask yourself: could YOU tell if you'd missed a gate in fog and adrenaline?

   🔄 BACKUP: If you don't ski, take the gondola up and walk the summer hiking trail along the slalom course route (July-August). Or visit Val d'Isère tourist office and ask for the 1968 Olympics photo exhibit - they have images of the controversial finish.

   Traverse 300km of Pistes - Tignes to Val d'Isère and Back

   300 kilometers of trails, 153 runs. Named after the man who won ALL THREE Alpine events at 1968 Grenoble - the triple crown that only 5 people in history have achieved. The traverse from Tignes to Val d'Isère is 12-15km one-way depending on route. Round-trip with ski time: full day. You're skiing across terrain named after living legend Jean-Claude Killy, who grew up in Val d'Isère and put this valley on the world map. Buy Espace Killy lift pass (€73/day) and follow signs for 'Val d'Isère' from Tignes Le Lac or Val Claret (key lifts: Palafour, Fresse, Tommeuses chairs). Ski to Val d'Isère village, have lunch, ski back via different route. Intermediate level required (blue/red runs). Best: clear weather, February-March. Allow 6-8 hours total.

   🔄 BACKUP: If weather closes high lifts, do the lower 'Valley Link' route via Brévières-La Daille - shorter but still connects the two resorts. Or book a guide through ESF Tignes (€150-300 half-day) to learn the best routes.

   Toast Killy at the Val d'Isère Wine Bar He Grew Up Seeing

   Jean-Claude Killy grew up in Val d'Isère in the 1950s-60s when it was still a small mountain village. He would have walked past La Baraque wine bar (Rue Principale) countless times before becoming the most famous skier on the planet. You just skied across 300km of terrain named after him. Now drink where his legend began. Order a glass of Savoie Mondeuse (€12-18) or Jacquère (€10-15). Ask the bartender: 'Did Killy ever drink here?' (Probably not - La Baraque opened after his racing career - but they'll have stories.) Then ask: 'What do locals think of the Schranz controversy?' The Austrian contingent in Val d'Isère has OPINIONS. So do the French. You're about to learn that 1968 still stings.

   🔄 BACKUP: If La Baraque is full (it often is), try Cocorico wine bar (Rue du Fornet) or Bananas bar (also has wine list). Or buy a bottle at Nicolas wine shop in village (€15-40) and drink on the Bellevarde terrace while watching skiers on Killy's run.

   Compare Tignes Concrete vs Val d'Isère Charm Over Wine

   Two approaches to ski resort development. Tignes: purpose-built after drowning the original village, optimized for lift access, zero charm. Val d'Isère: preserved village character, grew organically, Killy's hometown. Same Espace Killy ski area. Wildly different souls. Now add wine to the comparison. Buy same bottle of Savoie wine in both resorts. Taste in Tignes (modern, efficient, soulless). Taste in Val d'Isère (traditional, charming, rooted).
