   While Tignes Le Lac and Val Claret are brutalist concrete ski stations built in the 1960s-70s after drowning Old Tignes, Les Brévières is REAL - stone farmhouses, old chalets, a church, locals who remember when this was farming country before the tourists arrived. This village survived the 1952 dam because it's UPSTREAM of the flood zone. It's the Tignes that didn't drown. Ski or drive to Brévières at 1,550m (accessible by skiing down from Tignes Le Lac or driving via D87 road). Walk the cobblestone streets, touch stone walls that predate the ski resort by centuries. Find the oldest building you can (some date to 1700s) and ask any locals over 70: 'What was Brévières like before Tignes became a ski resort?' If they're OLD locals, they remember.

   🔄 BACKUP: If no locals to talk to, visit the church interior (usually open). The religious artifacts and architecture tell the pre-tourism story. Or eat at La Bouida restaurant (traditional Savoyard) and ask staff about village history.

   Taste Beaufort Cheese with Mondeuse at La Bouida

   Beaufort cheese is the 'Prince of Gruyères' - pressed, cooked cow's milk from Beaufortain, Tarentaise, Maurienne. Paired with Mondeuse de Savoie (deep purple red, strawberry, white pepper), this is the TEXTBOOK Alpine pairing. The cheese comes from cows grazing on slopes you can SEE from La Bouida restaurant in Les Brévières. The wine comes from vines in valleys 50km north. Regional harmony isn't a myth here. It's geography. Order the Beaufort cheese plate (€12-18) and a glass of Mondeuse (€10-15). Ask your server: 'Where does your Beaufort come from?' If it's TARENTAISE Beaufort (the valley you're in), you're eating hyper-local. The wine cuts through the cheese's creamy richness - Mondeuse's acidity and tannins are 'tailor-made' for melted Alpine cheese. This pairing evolved over centuries because it WORKS.

   Two approaches to ski resort development, 550m apart vertically. Brévières: preserved 17th-18th century village, grew organically, stone and wood, SOUL. Tignes upper stations: purpose-built after 1952 dam, optimized for ski-in/ski-out, concrete and glass, zero charm. Same ski area. Wildly different philosophies. Walk Brévières streets in Les Brévières village center, touch the stone walls (some are 300+ years old). Then ski back UP to Tignes Le Lac (or drive). Walk those streets, touch the concrete (50-60 years old, already weathering badly). The contrast is BRUTAL. Ask yourself: why did France bulldoze Old Tignes (stone village) and replace it with concrete ski stations? The answer: post-war modernism believed concrete was progress. We know better now.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you don't ski, google image search 'Tignes Val Claret architecture' vs 'Les Brévières Tignes.' The visual contrast is shocking. Then visit Brévières in person to appreciate what survived.

   Ask Locals: Did Your Family Know the Drowned Villagers?

   Brévières is 10km upstream from drowned Old Tignes. When the dam flooded the valley in 1952, Brévières survived because it's higher elevation. But the 473 displaced villagers were NEIGHBORS. Some may have relocated to Brévières. Some Brévières families definitely knew them. This is living memory (barely - people who were adults in 1952 are 90+ now). At La Bouida or village bar in Les Brévières, ask staff (ideally older, local): 'Did your family know anyone from Old Tignes before the dam?' If they're LOCAL Tarentaise families (not seasonal workers), they might have stories. The 1952 drowning was REGIONAL trauma. Brévières residents watched their downstream neighbors lose everything. Some of those neighbors moved HERE.

   🔄 BACKUP: If current locals don't have direct stories, ask: 'Are there any elderly villagers who remember 1952?' They might direct you to someone. Or visit on a summer Sunday when locals gather after church - better chance of finding OLD locals with memories.
