The contrast with ski resorts is stark: no lifts, no crowds, just vines and silence among medieval villages and impossible-angle terraces.

It's made from Roussanne (called Bergeron locally) but tastes completely different from Rhône Roussanne: where Rhône is heady and rich, this is crystalline, mineral, apricot-scented. Ask the winemaker WHY it's different—the answer involves altitude, slope angle, and specific microclimate. Taste multiple vintages if offered, buy what you love. You can't get this terroir expression anywhere else on the planet.

   Ask any Savoie winemaker for Mondeuse, especially "Vieilles Vignes"—most visitors ask about white, you ask about red. Mondeuse is Savoie's indigenous variety, DNA-linked to Syrah. Roman writer Columella described it as "the grape that ripens amidst the snow." It tastes like spiced red berries with pepper. Old-vine versions (Vieilles Vignes, 50+ year vines) are dramatically more complex. Best producers: Domaine Louis Magnin, Fabien Trosset. Buy a bottle—this grape barely exists outside Savoie, making it a liquid souvenir of terroir you can't find anywhere else.
