   Drive the D1 Through Vineyard Villages

   50km of vineyard-draped slopes along the D1 road from Épernay heading west toward Château-Thierry reveal villages nobody visits: Dormans, Trélou-sur-Marne, Charly-sur-Marne. Meunier vines on every hillside catch maximum sun on south-facing slopes - this is the warmer, fruitier, more accessible side of champagne. Start Épernay, head west on D1, stop at ANY grower sign you see (and you'll see dozens) with no agenda for random discoveries. Budget 3-5 hours with stops.

   🔄 BACKUP: If weather is bad, skip to Château-Thierry by main road and do Pannier cellars instead.

   Stop at 2-3 Unmarked Growers

   Small growers welcome visitors in any village along D1 with "Champagne" signs. Many don't have websites - they make wine, sell it locally, and ship to grandchildren in Paris. You're their export market now. Pull over when you see a "Dégustation" or "Champagne [Name]" sign, walk in, and say: "Bonjour, est-ce que vous faites des dégustations?" Most charge €5-15 for 3 tastes. Cash is king.

   Photograph the South-Facing Slopes

   Marne River moderates temperatures while south-facing slopes capture maximum sunshine at any viewpoint along D1, especially near river crossings. This microclimate is WARMER than northern Champagne - crucial for ripening Meunier. The landscape looks different: rounder, gentler, greener. Stop at high points and compare slope angles to what you've seen in Reims/Épernay. Note vine row directions (always facing south). Golden hour (morning or evening) is magical.

   End at Château-Thierry (Optional)

   Medieval castle ruins and WWI American monument await in Château-Thierry, end of the D1 route, with trains back to Paris (46 min, €7). You can return the rental car here and train back - no driving tired after tastings. Castle ruins are free and central town, monument is 2 miles west on Hill 204. If continuing, visit Champagne Pannier's medieval cellars.

   🔄 BACKUP: If short on time, turn around at Dormans - still captures the valley essence.
