Louis-Eugène Pannier discovered them in 1899 and thought: champagne. 2.5km of tunnels hold 4 MILLION bottles in these underground cellars (23 Rue Roger Catillon). Book at champagnepannier.com. Mon-Sat 9:30-12:30 & 14:00-18:00. Closed Sundays, Saturdays in Jan-Feb. Tours in English and French. Ask: "What was this quarry originally used for?"

   Connect Wine to WWI History

   The Battle of Château-Thierry (1918) was "the turning point of WWI." American troops earned the nickname "Rock of the Marne" here. The monument overlooks these same vineyards. Champagne cellars sheltered civilians during bombing. After your cellar tour, drive to American Monument on Hill 204 (2 miles west of Château-Thierry town). Free entry. The terrace overlooks the Marne Valley vineyards. Stand where soldiers stood. The visitor center explains American involvement.

   Taste the Train-Accessible Champion

   Château-Thierry is 46 minutes from Paris Gare de l'Est. €7 train fare. This is champagne country's easiest day trip - no car needed, no expensive TGV. After your tour, taste 2-3 champagnes in the tasting room. Ask: "Which cuvée best represents Vallée de la Marne Meunier?" Note the fruitier, softer character compared to northern champagnes. Buy a bottle for the train back.
