   Chambre Neuf sits inside Hotel Gustavia - built in 1890 when Swedish visitors first discovered Chamonix. The bar's name means 'Room 9' because it literally was room number nine in the original hotel. For 130+ years, this has been the Swedish embassy of après-ski. Walk in after 4pm and count the Swedish flags. Ask the bartender about 'the tradition' - Swedes have been returning to this exact room for four generations. Some families have photos of their great-grandparents standing in the same spot. Order a Génépi (€8) - the local alpine liqueur - and toast 'Skål' like the regulars.

   In 2016, Chambre Neuf closed for renovation. The Swedish ski community panicked - would their spiritual home survive? When it reopened in 2017, regulars flew from Stockholm just to check if the soul survived. Look for the wooden panels behind the bar - they're original 1890s timber that the renovators saved after a fight with the architects. Touch them. You're touching the same wood that absorbed 130 years of 'Skål' and spilled Génépi. Ask any Swedish guest about 'the renovation scare' - they'll have opinions.

   Between 6-8pm, Chambre Neuf transforms. Order a bottle of local Savoyard wine (€35-45 for Chignin-Bergeron or Mondeuse) and stake out a spot near the live music. The Swedish drinking songs start around 7pm - you don't need to know the words. The Scandinavians will teach you. Warning: this is not subtle après-ski. This is 130 years of Swedish ski culture compressed into a wooden room at the base of Mont Blanc. You'll leave with new friends who insist you visit them in Göteborg.
