   La Meije was the LAST major Alpine peak to be summited — August 16, 1877 by Emmanuel Boileau de Castelnau, Pierre Gaspard, and Gaspard's son. Mont Blanc fell in 1786, Matterhorn in 1865, but La Meije held out because there's no easy route. From the top of Jandri Express at 3,200m, walk to the glacier viewing area and look west/northwest for the distinctive pyramidal summit (3,983m). The climbers attempted the south face on August 4, 1877, using BARE FEET for better grip, were forced to abandon and leave fixed rope. They returned August 16, summited, then bivouacked overnight on an uncomfortable ledge during descent. This peak said NO for 91 years after Mont Blanc.

   Pierre Gaspard (1834-1915) was a La Grave mountain guide who spent YEARS attempting this peak. The 1877 bare-feet climb and overnight bivouac is legendary. At Le 3200 restaurant terrace with La Meije visible, order Crozes-Hermitage from Rhône or Chignin-Bergeron from Savoie. Raise your glass toward the peak and toast: 'To Gaspard, who climbed that with bare feet.' Feel the absurdity of toasting a 19th-century mountain guide while sitting at a mechanized restaurant with panoramic windows.    Understand Why La Grave Has No Groomed Runs

   La Grave, the village on La Meije's other side, inherited the peak's DNA — the stubbornness that resisted conquest for 91 years. No groomed pistes, no avalanche control, one main lift to glacier edge, 2,100m of skiable vertical, all backcountry. While Les 2 Alpes built 46 lifts and concrete apartments, La Grave said: 'If you want to ski here, earn it.' Ask ski patrollers: 'What's La Grave like compared to here?' They'll describe it with reverence or horror. Key stat: La Grave has ONE lift, Les 2 Alpes has 46. Same mountain range, opposite philosophies. Gaspard would've skied La Grave (if skiing existed in 1877) but NOT Les 2 Alpes.
