   Walk to Harjutorinkatu 1 in Kallio. Kotiharjun Sauna has operated since 1928 — Helsinki's last traditional public sauna still heated by wood fire. Before entering, stand outside and smell the birch smoke rising from the chimney. Modern saunas are electric; this one burns real birch logs that the staff feed into a massive stove every 30 minutes. Entry is around EUR 15. Bring your own towel or rent one. The locker room is basic — no spa aesthetics, no Instagram lighting. This is how Helsinki bathed before the wellness industry existed.

   Complete One Full Sauna Cycle: Heat, Cool, Rest

   Inside Kotiharjun, follow the traditional Finnish sauna cycle that UNESCO recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020. Step 1: Enter the sauna room (80-100°C) and sit on the upper bench. Pour water on the stones (löyly) and let the steam hit your skin. Stay 10-15 minutes or until you feel the heat is enough. Step 2: Cool down — Kotiharjun has cold showers (no Baltic plunge here, unlike Löyly). Step 3: Rest in the changing area for 5-10 minutes. Repeat the cycle 2-3 times. By the third round, the post-sauna euphoria kicks in — every wine you taste afterwards will taste better.

   🔄 BACKUP: If the upper bench is too hot, sit on the lower bench (20-30°C cooler). No one judges your heat tolerance.

   Walk to a Kallio Wine Bar with Post-Sauna Glow

   After your sauna session, walk 10-15 minutes from Kotiharjun to any Kallio wine bar — Wino (Fleminginkatu 11), Way Bakery (Fleminginkatu), or Flor (nearby). The post-sauna state is physiologically real: elevated heart rate, dilated blood vessels, heightened senses. Order a glass of natural wine and taste it with this heightened awareness. Many Finnish wine professionals swear that the best tasting they ever did was after sauna. The combination of thermal shock and wine is uniquely Finnish — no other wine culture has this ritual.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you don't want wine immediately after sauna, a cold beer at Kotiharjun's own serving window is the more traditional option. No shame.
