   Walk to the centre of Kauppatori (Market Square), past the fish stalls and souvenir tents. The Tsarina's Stone is an obelisk topped with a golden double-headed eagle — erected in 1835 to commemorate Empress Alexandra's visit in 1833. When this stone was placed, Finland wasn't a country. It was a Russian Grand Duchy, and the empress was touring her husband's northern possession. The eagle on top is the Russian imperial symbol. Read the inscription on the base — it's in Swedish and Russian (not Finnish, because Finnish wasn't yet an official language).

   🔄 BACKUP: The obelisk is in the open square, visible from the harbour. If market stalls block the view, approach from the Presidential Palace side.

   Decode the Presidential Palace's Former Identity

   Face north from the Tsarina's Stone. The understated neoclassical building at Pohjoisesplanadi 1 is the Presidential Palace — but it wasn't built for presidents. It was the residence of the Russian Governor General, the Tsar's representative in Finland. The building's modesty (compared to, say, the Swedish Royal Palace) was deliberate: Russia didn't want Helsinki to feel too important. Now it houses Finland's head of state. Walk to the front entrance and check for the presidential flag — if it's flying, the president is home. Guards change on the hour.

   Toast Havis Amanda's Scandalous Century

   Walk 200 metres south along the harbour to the Havis Amanda fountain (1908) at the corner of Esplanadi and Unioninkatu. Sculptor Ville Vallgren created her in Paris — a nude bronze woman rising from the sea, symbolising Helsinki itself. When she was unveiled, the city nearly rioted: too naked, too French, too provocative for Lutheran Helsinki. Students adopted her as their mascot. Every May Day (Vappu), at exactly 6 PM, engineering students wade through the crowd and place a student cap (ylioppilaslakki) on her head while thousands watch. Find the cap marks on her bronze skull — 113 years of this tradition have left traces.
