   Find the 1931 Bronze Bear

   Walk to Karhupuisto (Bear Park) at the intersection of Fleminginkatu and Pengerkatu. The park's guardian is a bronze bear sculpted by Jussi Mäntynen in 1931 — Finland's foremost animal sculptor who studied bears in the wild. The statue sits near the park entrance on a granite pedestal. Touch the bear's nose — it's worn smooth and shiny from decades of people doing exactly this. Mäntynen named the park. Before his bear, this was just another Kallio square. The bear (karhu) gave it an identity and a meeting point. 'Meet me at the bear' is still how Kallio locals give directions.

   🔄 BACKUP: The bear is impossible to miss — it's the only bronze sculpture in the park. If the park is hosting an event and access is restricted, the bear is visible from the street.

   Hunt Kallio's Best Street Art Mural

   From Karhupuisto, walk the surrounding streets (Fleminginkatu, Vaasankatu, Hämeentie) and hunt for street art. Kallio has Helsinki's highest concentration of murals, paste-ups, and stencil art — the scene changes seasonally as new artists work over old pieces. Look above eye level: the best murals are often on upper walls and building sides. The style ranges from Finnish surrealism to international street art collaborations. Find the largest mural you can within 3 blocks of the bear. Take note of the artist signature (if visible) — many are Finnish artists with gallery careers who still paint walls.

   Kallio is Helsinki's most eclectic district — every block has a different personality. From Karhupuisto, walk 4 blocks in any direction and count the distinct 'worlds' you pass through: Ethiopian restaurants on one corner, vintage furniture shops on the next, a 1970s workers' bar next to a third-wave coffee roaster. Count distinct neighbourhood identities within 4 blocks. Kallio holds Helsinki's immigrant communities, its bohemian artists, its students, and its old working class — all within walking distance of the bear. This density is why the wine bars that opened here feel different from those in Punavuori.
