   Helsinki's Design District marks its member shops, galleries, and studios with orange circle stickers in their windows — over 200 locations across 25 streets. Start at the corner of Uudenmaankatu and Iso Roobertinkatu in Punavuori. Walk any direction and count orange circles. Each one is a curated design space: ceramics studios, furniture makers, textile artists, glass workshops. The density in Punavuori is remarkable — some blocks have 5-6 circles. Try to hit 15 different circles in 30 minutes. The variety tells you why Helsinki was World Design Capital 2012.

   Find the World's Oldest Design Museum

   The Design Museum at Korkeavuorenkatu 23 has operated since 1894 — one of the world's oldest museums dedicated to design. The permanent collection traces Finnish design from the Kalevala-inspired national romantic movement through Alvar Aalto's functionalism to Marimekko's pop revolution. Entry around EUR 12. Look for the Aalto Savoy vase (1936) and the original Fiskars scissors. The Architecture Museum sits next door at Kasarmikatu 24 — the two together explain why a country of 5.5 million people punches above its weight in global design.

   Hunt Art Nouveau Faces on Punavuori's Facades

   Punavuori has 600+ Art Nouveau buildings — second only to Riga in Europe for Jugendstil density. Walk along Huvilakatu and Fredrikinkatu and look UP: the facades are decorated with stone faces, mythological creatures, and carved flora from the 1900-1910 period when Finnish architects used Jugendstil as cultural resistance against Russian rule. Find the most dramatic face carving you can — some buildings have full human figures, bears, owls, and dragons. The best concentration is between Bulevardi and Iso Roobertinkatu. Count at least 5 distinct carved faces.
