   Find the Blue Monkey That Proves India Trade

   The most explosive archaeological detail in the entire Aegean.

   The Blue Monkey Fresco - discovered 1969 in Room B6. For decades, experts thought the monkeys were African. Then recent analysis identified them as Hanuman langurs - a species that ONLY exists in India. These Minoan artists, painting on Santorini in 1600 BC, had seen animals from a civilization 2,500 miles away across open sea. The trade route to the Indus Valley was already ancient when this eruption buried the city. Inside the covered excavation structure at Akrotiri, follow signs to the frescoes display area near the main excavated buildings. Look for the monkey fresco display - the animals are rendered in brilliant blue-green, climbing rocks. Ask a guide or read the panel: which continent did scientists originally say these were from? Then ask: what changed that conclusion?

   Locate the Wine Press Ruins That Predate Greece Itself

   Wine was being made here 3,500+ years ago - before the Greeks arrived.

   Akrotiri was producing wine and olive oil commercially in 1600 BC - roughly 1,000 years before classical Greek civilization as most people know it. The Minoan economy here was based on wine. When this city was buried, those ungrafted vines just kept growing. The volcanic ash that killed this city is the SAME volcanic soil your glass of Assyrtiko grew in this week. As you walk through the excavated streets, look for the industrial area panels that reference agricultural production. Find any panel or exhibit discussing the economy of Akrotiri. Look for references to "pithoi" - the massive ceramic storage jars used for wine and oil. Count how many you can spot among the excavated buildings. Some are still standing in position.

   Stand Where the Spring Fresco Was Found Intact

   One fresco survived the eruption completely whole - the only one ever found entire.

   The Spring Fresco is the ONLY fresco from Akrotiri ever found completely intact - not in fragments. It shows the Theran landscape BEFORE the eruption: red lilies with yellow stems, swallows in pairs announcing spring. It is a portrait of this island as it looked 3,600 years ago - before the catastrophe that would reshape the Mediterranean. The original is now at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira (exp-dion-vi-025), but this is where it fell from the wall. Find the information panel about fresco recovery on the excavation walkway above the main building structures, looking for the marker indicating 'House of the Ladies' or the fresco discovery areas. Notice how the building structures show where frescoes fell during the eruption - the volcanic weight that buried the city also preserved everything.
