The 20 monasteries of Mount Athos have operated continuously since 963 AD - 1,063 years of unbroken monastic practice. The peninsula has its own government, immigration status, time zone, and wine production. Entry requires a special permit limited to 10 Orthodox Christian and 10 non-Orthodox male visitors per day. Women have been prohibited since at least 1060 AD. Book a morning cruise from Ouranoupolis harbor (the last secular settlement) - these 2-3 hour tours pass close to several major monasteries without requiring permits. Ask the boat captain which monastery is known for wine production. Great Lavra (the oldest, founded 963 AD) has the most established wine tradition.
🔄 BACKUP: If no boat tour is running, walk to the Ouranoupolis tower viewpoint. On a clear day, the mountain summit (2,033m) and the uppermost monastery buildings are visible from the mainland side.
