You are stepping into a Roman banqueting room where the entire floor is Dionysus's Triumph — the god rides a chariot pulled by sea panthers (panther-fish hybrids that exist only in his entourage) while holding a rhyton drinking horn and his thyrsus. The message is absolute: Dionysus has conquered everything — land, sea, and the boundary between animals and monsters. Enter the Villa of Dionysus (eastern path from park entrance, signposted separately from main ruins) and look down immediately — the mosaic is at your feet per Roman convention. Walk slowly around the perimeter watching how the floor composition changes, but the chariot scene in the center is only fully readable from the doorway position where guests processed inward toward the god.
🔄 BACKUP: If Villa access is limited, the site's illustrated brochure (included with entry) has full-color reproduction with iconography labeled.
