   Hike Where Agave Carried Her Son's Head on a Thyrsus

   Euripides' Bacchae set the most horrifying scene in Greek drama on this mountain. Agave killed her son Pentheus without knowing who he was. This is that mountain.

   In Euripides' *Bacchae* (which WON FIRST PRIZE at Athens' festival of Dionysus), King Pentheus' mother Agave carries his severed head back to Thebes on her thyrsus, believing it's a lion she killed in worship. She doesn't know she's killed her son. When the madness lifts, Euripides writes one of the most devastating recognition scenes in all drama. The trailhead starts from Vilia village, 50 km from Mandra on the Athens-Corinth road. Park 1 km after Vilia; the trailhead is 100m off the right side of the road. Follow the 12 km loop trail — well-signposted, 3.5 hours total to the 1,409m summit (Profitis Ilias peak).

   🔄 BACKUP: Drive to the first refuge at 1,090m and hike only the upper section (approximately 1 hour to summit).

   Stand at the Athens-Thebes Boundary Where Mythology Divided

   Cithaeron was the physical boundary between Athens and Thebes. It was also the mythological boundary between reason and madness, civilization and wilderness.

   Mount Cithaeron formed the boundary between Athens (reason, law, Athena's wisdom) and Thebes (Dionysus, ecstasy, divine madness). Euripides chose it as the site where rational civilization is literally torn apart by divine forces. Every time Athens looked south and saw this mountain, they were looking at the limit of reason. At the summit or high ridge, face south toward Athens (50 km away, sometimes visible), then turn north toward Thebes (20 km). You're standing on the literal divide between the two greatest city-states of ancient Greece. Ask yourself: which side felt more dangerous to the ancients?

   🔄 BACKUP: If weather prevents summit, the ridge trail between the two refuges provides similar orientation. The first refuge at 1,090m already offers significant views in both directions.

   Read Pentheus' Fate at the Trailhead Signage

   Before you climb, know what happened here. Euripides wrote the story 2,400 years ago and it still disturbs people deeply.

   Pentheus is Dionysus' cousin and the most rational character in the *Bacchae* — every reasonable argument he makes is correct. Dionysus is still there. The maenads still tear Pentheus apart. The play's most disturbing message: reason cannot protect you from forces that reason cannot acknowledge. Before starting the hike, sit for 5 minutes at the trailhead. Read the *Bacchae*'s final scene if you have it — the Messenger's speech describing Pentheus' death is 60 lines of the most intensely written passages in Greek literature. You don't need to climb having read those lines, but you will experience it differently if you do.
