   The maenads didn't worship in a temple. They climbed Parnassus and came HERE. This cave was their winter sanctuary.

   The Corycian Cave (Korykion Andron) sits on Parnassus's southern slopes at 1,370m altitude. This was not casual worship. The Thyiades — 'raving women' who followed Dionysus — climbed here for winter rituals. Aeschylus wrote about it in *Eumenides*. An eroded inscription found inside mentions Thyiades ceremonies by name. This is one of the few places where ancient ecstatic Dionysian worship is ARCHAEOLOGICALLY ATTESTED. Start from Arachova village (NOT Delphi): 4.3 miles, 889 ft elevation gain, 2-2.5 hours each way. Follow signs for 'Korykion Andron' or 'E4 trail.' Carry 2 liters of water — the final push requires scrambling on hands and feet for 50 meters.

   🔄 BACKUP: If hiking isn't possible, a 4WD vehicle can drive most of the way (2WD possible but rough). Ask in Arachova for 'the road to Korykion' and drive to within 15 minutes walk of the entrance.

   Read the Eroded Inscription Inside the Cave

   Ancient worshippers left 9 inscriptions here. One mentions the Thyiades — Dionysus' female devotees — by name.

   Nine inscriptions were found at Corycian Cave, most dedicated to Pan and the Corycian nymphs. But one eroded inscription specifically mentions the Thyiades — women who participated in Dionysian ceremonies here. This is primary source confirmation, not myth. Real women, in real winter, climbed this mountain and performed ecstatic rituals in this dark stone space. Inside the cave entrance chamber, let your eyes adjust to darkness and bring a flashlight. Scan the cave walls near the entrance for carved Greek letters — faint and weathered, but the shape of 2,000-year-old carving in limestone is remarkable.

   🔄 BACKUP: If inscriptions aren't immediately visible, spend time inside the cave in silence. The cave is 60m wide at entrance, 25m high — an extraordinary natural space. The ancient worshippers chose this for a reason: high altitude, natural shelter, darkness, distance from civilization.

   Stand at 1,370m and Feel Why Ecstasy Happened Here

   High altitude. Isolation. Darkness. Wind off the Parnassus summit. This is why the maenads came here, not to a comfortable lowland temple.

   The word 'ecstasy' (ekstasis in Greek) literally means 'standing outside oneself.' The Thyiades engineered the conditions: altitude, cold, darkness, drumming, wine, and physical exhaustion from the climb. Modern neuroscience confirms that hypoxia (reduced oxygen at altitude), fasting, intense exercise, sensory overload alter consciousness as reliably as any substance. Outside the cave entrance at 1,370 meters, face south toward the Gulf of Corinth. Below you: Delphi, Arachova, the entire Phocis region. You are higher than almost everything visible. This perspective made the Thyiades feel close to the gods. Sit for at least 15 minutes.

   🔄 BACKUP: If weather is poor, the cave interior offers shelter. The ancient worshippers had no choice about weather — winter rituals happened in winter conditions.
