   Find Dionysus' Winter Throne at Apollo's Temple

   Apollo ruled Delphi for 9 months. For 3 winter months, he simply left — and gave the sanctuary to Dionysus.

   This temple served TWO gods — Apollo dominated summer and autumn, but every winter Apollo abandoned Delphi to dwell with the mythical Hyperboreans. Dionysus took over. The Pythia fell silent. Women called Thyiades ('the raving ones') in fawn skins and ivy wreaths worked themselves into ecstatic frenzy on these very slopes. At the Temple of Apollo on the main terrace, walk the Sacred Way slowly and ask a guide: 'How many months per year was the oracle silent?' (Answer: 3 winter months — Dionysus' season.) Look for decorative imagery combining Apollo's lyre with Dionysus' grapevine.

   🔄 BACKUP: If signage is limited, stand inside the temple precinct at the altar. This is the spot where the oracular fire burned — it went cold every winter when Dionysus took over.

   Stand at the Omphalos — the Navel Where Prophecy Stopped for Wine

   The stone Greeks believed marked the exact center of the Earth. Every oracle consultation began with a wine libation.

   Greeks traveled months to consult the Pythia here. Before every consultation, the process started with a wine libation poured from a krater — dedicated to Dionysus. Even at Apollo's most rational sanctuary, Dionysus was the door you walked through first. The philosopher Plutarch, a PRIEST here, wrote that the Pythia's trance was induced by vapors from a chasm — modern geologists found two fault lines crossing beneath the temple, producing ethylene gas. Follow the Sacred Way uphill past the Treasury of Athens, time your arrival after 10am when crowds thin, and stand at the omphalos site marker.

   🔄 BACKUP: The actual carved omphalos stone is in the museum (included in your €20 ticket). Ground floor — look for the egg-shaped stone with a woven net pattern carved into it.

   Locate the Theater Where Dionysus Competed with Apollo

   The theater at Delphi hosted the Pythian Games — the Olympics' rival festival. Drama (Dionysus' invention) competed here alongside athletic glory (Apollo's domain).

   This theater was built for the Pythian Games, held every 4 years in Apollo's honor. But theater itself was Dionysus' gift to civilization — every Greek drama competition was performed at a festival OF Dionysus. Even here at Apollo's sanctuary, theatrical tradition belonged to the wine god. Climb to the theater (steep walk, wear comfortable shoes). From the top row of 35 seats, you can see the entire Sacred Way below. The semicircular orchestra at the bottom is where the chorus performed dithyrambs (hymns to Dionysus) as part of the games.

   🔄 BACKUP: If the theater is under restoration, view from the pathway outside. The stage's backdrop faces the valley — on clear days you can see the Gulf of Itea 10 km below.

   Read the Delphic Maxims at the Entrance Wall

   147 maxims were inscribed at Delphi's entrance. 'Nothing in excess' — written at the home of the wine god's winter kingdom.

   The most famous Delphic maxim was 'Know thyself' (Gnothi seauton). The second: 'Nothing in excess' (Meden agan). Both were supposedly spoken by Apollo. But for 3 months a year, the god of EXCESS himself — Dionysus — ruled this place. The same sanctuary that preached moderation hosted ecstatic winter rituals where women danced themselves into frenzy. At the entrance to the archaeological zone near the Sacred Way start, photograph both maxims before walking up — these phrases will reframe everything you see.

   🔄 BACKUP: If entrance panels aren't visible, ask at the ticket office: 'Where are the Delphic maxims displayed?' They appear in multiple formats throughout the site.
