The Papposilenus statue was found in 1832 during the first excavations of the Theater of Dionysus. Papposilenus is the elderly satyr who was Dionysus' foster father, who raised the god in secret after Hera discovered Dionysus' existence and tried to destroy him. In this statue, the old satyr carries the infant on his shoulder — and the infant, already the god of theater, holds a theatrical mask in his hand. He arrived in the world already holding the tool of his future. In the South Slope gallery at the Acropolis Museum (Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, €15 high season), look for the label 'Papposilenus carrying infant Dionysus.' The statue is not large — note what the baby is holding (the mask), note the old satyr's expression (protective, slightly exhausted from hiding this child from a jealous goddess).
🔄 BACKUP: If the gallery layout has changed, ask any staff member for the 'Papposilenus' statue - it's one of the museum's most significant Dionysian objects and has been on permanent display.
