   Kottabos was the drinking game of the ancient Greek world - played at every symposium from 600 BC onward. It involves flicking wine lees from a shallow kylix cup at a target. Prizes were kisses, cakes, or sweetmeats.

   You're about to play the most popular drinking game of the ancient world. Kottabos was everywhere in 6th-5th century BC Greece - depicted on thousands of vases, played after every dinner. The rules: recline on your left elbow, hold the shallow circular kylix cup in your right hand, and fling the wine dregs at a bronze disk balanced on top of a tall pole. Knock it off so it drops with a loud clang into the bowl below. Ask your host to explain the kottabos rules before the symposium wine is poured. The kylix is deliberately awkward - shallow, two-handled, designed to rest on your finger while reclining. The flick is a wrist snap, not an arm throw.

   Pure wine at a Greek symposium was considered barbaric. The ritual of mixing wine with water in a shared krater was the defining act of civilized Greek drinking - and the ratio mattered enormously.

   Greeks never drank wine unmixed — pure wine (akratos) was for barbarians and animals. The symposiarch decided the ratio for the evening: typically 3 parts water to 2 parts wine, or 2:1 for a serious night. This wasn't diluting for safety — it was philosophical. Control over the ratio meant control over the evening's level of inspiration versus madness. When the krater is presented, ask your host what ratio is being used tonight, then drink from a kylix balanced on one finger, not gripped in the fist. Notice how differently this feels from a modern wine glass — the shape forces a certain pace.
