   Tiryns' walls are up to 10 meters thick with stones weighing 13 tons each - so massive that ancient Greeks, visiting 1,000 years after construction, invented a myth to explain them.

   Pausanias visited Tiryns in the 2nd century AD - a THOUSAND YEARS after these walls were built - and wrote: 'The wall is a work of the Cyclopes made of unwrought stones, each of which is so big that a pair of mules could not move the smallest from its place.' He genuinely could not explain the engineering. At the Tiryns archaeological site (8km from Nafplio, €6 admission), walk to the largest exposed wall section and place both hands flat on a single stone. Each averages 1-2 meters wide, 0.5 meters tall. The Mycenaean builders moved 13-ton blocks without wheeled transport. Nobody has replicated this construction method - the mystery is current, not ancient.

   🔄 BACKUP: Even from the road approach, the scale of the walls is visible. If the site is unexpectedly closed, the road-side view of the lower fortifications gives a clear sense of the stone scale. Tiryns is far less visited than Mycenae - you may genuinely have the site to yourself.

   Walk the Corbelled Gallery - A Tunnel Older Than Troy

   The corbelled galleries inside Tiryns' walls are roofed with progressively overlapping stones - the same engineering technique as the Treasury of Atreus dome, applied here to tunnels.

   Enter the corbelled galleries built INTO the main walls and look UP. The ceiling stones project inward from both sides until they almost meet - engineering from ~1400 BC, still holding 3,400 years later with NO mortar. These galleries stored weapons and wine amphorae for the same civilization that drank from golden cups at Mycenae 8km away. The galleries are narrow passages (1-2 meters wide) on the lower citadel with triangular ceiling profiles. Walk the full length, run your hand along the fitted stones, count the overlapping courses on one ceiling section. Then exit and see the true wall thickness from outside - you're inside walls that are 10 meters thick.

   🔄 BACKUP: If gallery access is restricted for conservation, the upper citadel's palace ruins show the same megalithic construction in the wall bases. The site plan at entry marks gallery locations clearly.

   Locate the Palace Wine Storage Area and Read Its Place in Homer

   Homer called Tiryns 'mighty-walled' in the Iliad. The palace interior shows where wine was stored during Mycenae's golden wine-drinking age.

   Homer's Iliad mentions Tiryns as 'mighty-walled' in the Catalogue of Ships - part of Agamemnon's domain contributing forces to Troy. The palace on the upper citadel controlled the coastal approach to the Argolid plain, contemporary with Mycenae's golden cups era (1400-1200 BC). Storage magazines around the megaron (throne room) held wine amphorae analyzed for the same resin content as Mycenae's proto-retsina. Find the megaron in the palace complex and face south - the magazines flanked these spaces. Look east toward the sea where ships bringing Nemea wine and Mediterranean trade goods could be seen arriving from this exact vantage point.

   🔄 BACKUP: The site's information boards clearly map the palace zones. Tiryns is typically much quieter than Mycenae - you can spend time at each board without pressure. If boards are weathered, the entry site plan is detailed enough to navigate the palace independently.
