The technique gained popularity through the Oberammergau Passion Play (performed every 10 years since 1634), when pilgrims saw the painted houses and asked "What's that called?" Walk Ludwigstraße in Partenkirchen from east to west and count the facades — most were painted or restored AFTER WWII (1945+) by Heinrich Bickel and Otto Ertl, not as decoration but as cultural reconstruction, Bavarian identity reasserted through paint.

At Pane e Vino (Ludwigstraße 41, Italian trattoria with outdoor summer seating) or Gasthof Fraundorfer (Ludwigstraße 24, Bavarian with painted facade, open Mon/Wed-Sun), ask: "Haben Sie Fränkischen Silvaner?" Look for the Bocksbeutel bottle shape and pair with Käsespätzle — the facades are visual tradition, the wine is liquid tradition.

   Hunt the Altes Haus - Bickel's First Commission

   In 1921, Heinrich Bickel's career as a Lüftl painter began with ONE commission: a fresco on "Das Altes Haus" (The Old House), an old farmhouse on Ludwigstraße that became the ORIGIN POINT launching 100+ years of continuous tradition in this town. From that one wall, Bickel studied in Italy and Spain, painted facades across the Werdenfels region until the 1950s, and trained Otto Ertl (1953-1956), who's been painting for 50+ years. Walk Ludwigstraße slowly looking for the old farmhouse style with early Bickel work (less refined than his 1949-1950 masterpieces) and ask locals: "Wo ist das Altes Haus von Bickel?"

   🔄 BACKUP: If you can't find Das Altes Haus (it's documented but not always labeled), focus on Bickel's KNOWN masterpieces: Gasthof Fraundorfer (#24, 1949 wedding scene) and #31 (1950 couple with coats of arms). The progression from 1921 to 1949 shows Bickel's evolution from apprentice to master.
