Standing at the graves in Zermatt Mountaineers' Cemetery, face the inscriptions (Michel Croz's stone says he 'perished on the Matterhorn,' Douglas Hadow was 19 years old), then turn around. The same peak they died climbing watches over their resting place. Let that juxtaposition sink in.

Walk beyond the main graves for 10-15 minutes and count how many headstones show climbing-related deaths. Notice dates clustering around certain eras - early 1900s, the 1930s-40s 'Golden Age,' modern accidents. This village lives with death because it lives with mountains. Every climber here chose this path knowing the risks.
