   The Wengernalpbahn is the world's longest continuous rack-and-pinion railway - 19.11 kilometers from Lauterbrunnen to Grindelwald via Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg. Since 2014, they've run 10 modern low-floor panorama trains with 152 seats each - all second class, no first class (very Swiss democratic). Park your car in the municipal lots at Lauterbrunnen train station (Wengen is car-free - NO cars allowed past here). Board the Wengernalpbahn (WAB) cog railway to Wengen. Buy a ticket from the SBB counter or machine - prices start at $5 (€4) one-way. Board the WAB train marked "Wengen" or "Kleine Scheidegg." Sit on the RIGHT side for Staubbach Falls views. As the cog wheels engage and the train starts climbing, you're entering a car-free alpine world that's been this way since 1894.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you miss the WAB, trains run every 30 minutes. First train at 12:32 AM (yes, midnight), last at 11:32 PM. If you somehow arrive by car, there's no bypass - you MUST park in Lauterbrunnen and take the train. That's the whole point.

   Count the Electric Taxis at Wengen Station - Spot Wegmüller's Fleet

   Baggage too heavy? Herr and Frau Wegmüller run the only taxis in town.

   Wengen is car-free. The ONLY motorized vehicles allowed are electric taxis (for luggage) and service vehicles. Step off the WAB at Wengen train station arrival platform and immediately scan the station area. Herr and Frau Wegmüller operate Taxi Wegmüller - sometimes running two electric vehicles. You'll also see Taxi Ibex. These silent electric taxis ferry luggage from the station to hotels. Everything else - groceries, mail, supplies - moves on electric pallets gliding through the streets. The sound of Wengen is church bells, cow bells, and snow crunching. No engines.

   🔄 BACKUP: If no taxis are visible, walk into the village center (5 minutes). Watch for electric pallets carrying goods - they're the town's supply chain. Ask any local about the car ban - they'll tell you Wengen has been car-free since founding, and they're proud of it.

   Since Wengen banned cars from day one (1894 when the railway opened), the village soundscape is what Mary Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley heard when they wrote about their "dreamy excursion to an idyllic alpine farming community" in the early 1800s. Step off the WAB train and walk into town anywhere in Wengen village. The church bell chimes - always exactly on time. In summer, cow bells. In winter, snow crunching underfoot during high season. That's it. No engine hum. No exhaust. Just alpine silence. Set your watch. Wait for the next hour. When the church bell chimes, check - it will be EXACTLY on time. Close your eyes and listen for 60 seconds. What you DON'T hear is the absence of internal combustion.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you visit in summer, walk to the edge of town where alpine pastures begin. Listen for cow bells - the jingle is the only "traffic noise." In winter, stand in the village center during a snowfall and listen to skiers' boots crunching fresh powder. That's the "rush hour."

   Hotel Regina, Palace, and others built the same year the WAB arrived

   In 1894, the Wengernalpbahn railway project opened, and several hotels were immediately built on the Wengen plateau - including Hotel Regina. The railway made Wengen accessible without high mountain passes, attracting English tourists, writers, musicians (Goethe, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn visited the valley). From day one, Wengen was car-free by design - the railway WAS the access. Walk to Hotel Regina (look for the Victorian-style building with Swiss Heritage designation) in Wengen village center. Note the architecture - built in 1894 when the railway opened. Ask at reception about the hotel's mountaineering history - early legends stayed here. Then walk the village and notice: every building is within 10 minutes' walk. That's the car-free design - compact, walkable, silent.

   🔄 BACKUP: If Hotel Regina is closed, any village hotel or tourist office has historic photos of the 1894 railway opening and the simultaneous hotel construction boom. The Wengen Tourism office has exhibits on the car-free history.
