The massif has THREE summits above 4000m separated by glaciers and ridges. First exploration: 1851, but the first COMPLETE ascent to highest point didn't happen until July 30, 1859 by Charles Sainte-Claire Deville and team. From Verbier town center (Place Centrale), face south - that massive glaciated peak dominating the skyline is Grand Combin. If you see three distinct summits and lots of ice, you're looking at the right peak.

   Hike to Col de Vaux Before Dawn for Alpenglow

Leave Verbier 1-1.5hr before sunrise and hike toward Col de Vaux or any elevated spot with unobstructed south views. The show takes 20-30 minutes from first light to full gold as the sunrise turns 4,314m of mountain ALIVE. This is free, unforgettable, and yours.

   Grand Combin isn't one peak - it's a massif with THREE summits over 4000m. From Col de Vaux, Cabane Mont Fort terrace, or any high viewpoint facing Grand Combin, use binoculars or zoom on your phone camera. From left to right: Combin de Grafeneire (4,309m, the highest), Combin de Valsorey (4,184m, middle), Combin de la Tsessette (4,132m, right). The first ascent party in 1859 had to cross glaciers and ridges to reach Grafeneire - it's not a single climb, it's a multi-day commitment. Count the summits - you're looking for three distinct high points separated by cols.

   🔄 BACKUP: Ask anyone at Cabane Mont Fort: 'Show me the three Combin summits.' They'll point them out - the hut is a staging point for climbers attempting these peaks.

   Taste Warm Cornalin at Dawn - The Alpine Tradition

   Warm red wine at dawn is a real Alpine tradition - sounds insane, tastes perfect. Cornalin is THE Valais red for this: black cherry, raspberry, violets, spicy cinnamon/clove notes. It was nearly extinct in the 1970s (saved by Salgesch winegrowers finding a few vines), and now it's 'the greatest of Valais reds.' The night before, buy a bottle in Verbier and warm it gently on the stove - NOT boiling, just warm enough to release aromas. Pour into a thermos. At your sunrise viewpoint, pour a cup and sip while watching Grand Combin turn gold. The warmth fights the cold air, the spice complements the altitude.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you can't find Cornalin, use any Valais red (Humagne Rouge, Syrah). Or go cold - it's less traditional but still works. The view is the main event.
