   Hike the Haute Route Trail to the Hut at 2,475m

   You're hiking a section of the Haute Route - the most famous ski traverse in the world, first skied in 1911 by Marcel Kurz and Professor Roget. From Les Ruinettes (reached by the Médran cable car from Verbier), this 1.5-hour walk across La Chaux ski slopes delivers views that'll stop you dead: Petit Combin, Grand Combin (4,314m), Bec des Rosses, Mont Fort. The final approach to Cabane Mont Fort (2,475m) is a short, steep climb where you'll understand why alpinists love this place - you're high enough to feel it. Follow signs to 'Cabane Mont Fort' past the Attelas chairlift toward L'Inkontro restaurant and La Chaux. In summer, it's a gentle walk through meadows (cows and marmots). In winter, it's compacted snow - snowshoes usually unnecessary.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you don't want to hike, you can ski or snowshoe in winter - same route, different transport. Or just take the cable car to Mont Fort summit (3,329m) and look DOWN at the hut from above.

   Spot Mont Blanc AND Grand Combin from the Terrace

   This is 'one of the most exceptional views in the mountains around Verbier.' From Cabane Mont Fort's terrace (2,475m), you can see TWO 4,000m+ giants at once: Mont Blanc (4,808m, highest in the Alps) to the west, and Grand Combin (4,314m, the stubborn peak that remained 'one of the least known Alpine summits' until its first complete ascent in 1859) to the south. The Grand Combin dominates - it's RIGHT THERE, glaciated and massive, with the Val de Bagnes and Mauvoisin reservoir visible below. Face south toward the biggest mountain (Grand Combin), then turn 45 degrees left to spot Mont Blanc's distant white peak on the horizon.

   🔄 BACKUP: If weather's bad and you can't see, ask the hut guardian: 'Show me the Grand Combin on the map.' They'll trace the routes for you - the hut is a waypoint on multiple classic climbs.

   Taste Tartiflette with Valais Wine at Altitude

   The hut's two specialties are Pot-au-Feu (French beef stew) and Tartiflette (Alpine comfort food - potatoes, reblochon cheese, bacon, onions, white wine). This is mountain food at its purest - simple, hot, designed to refuel you after hiking or skiing. Order at the bar inside Cabane Mont Fort when you arrive, then sit at the communal tables with climbers, skiers, and Haute Route trekkers. Pair it with Fendant (white, crisp, thirst-quenching) or Cornalin (red, saved from extinction in the 1970s). Ask your neighbor: 'Where are you going?' The stories you'll hear are worth the trip.

   🔄 BACKUP: If tartiflette's not available (rare), go with Pot-au-Feu. The kitchen is simple but the ingredients are real - no frozen stuff at this altitude.

   Sleep in a Dormitory at 2,475m Under the Stars

   This is the full alpine experience: dormitory sleeping (shared rooms, bunk beds), dinner at communal tables, sunrise that turns the Grand Combin from blue to pink to gold. Book via SAC (Swiss Alpine Club) at least 1-2 weeks ahead during peak season - around €50-70 per night including dinner + breakfast. You'll fall asleep to the sound of wind on rock and wake to alpenglow at Cabane Mont Fort (15 rooms, 58 beds, 2,475m). Pack light, bring earplugs (snoring is universal), and wake early for sunrise - it's why you came.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you can't spend the night, at least stay for sunset. Watch the light drain out of the valley and the stars come out at 2,475m. Then hike down by headlamp - it's safe, just surreal.
