   Saas-Fee is surrounded by 13 peaks above 4,000m - MORE than any other village in the Alps. The challenge: name them all from your terrace seat at any wine bar with panoramic mountain views (Zur Mühle, Brasserie 1809, anywhere with southern exposure). Dom (4,545m - highest entirely in Switzerland), Täschhorn (4,491m), Alphubel, Allalinhorn, Rimpfischhorn, Strahlhorn, Nadelhorn, Lenzspitze, Ulrichshorn, Balfrin... that's 10, find the other 3. Legend says some bartenders reward completionists with a free glass - the challenge is real, the reward may be myth, try anyway. Ask for a peak identification map, scan horizon 180 degrees left to right, write your list, check against official count. If you nail all 13, announce it loudly.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you can't get all 13, at least identify Dom (tallest, most prominent) and Täschhorn (trident peak forming the "Mischabel fork" with Lenzspitze and Dom). Those two = mandatory.

   Hike to Hannig for the Full 360-Degree Peak Theater

   From village, you see maybe 10 of the 13 four-thousanders. From Hannig (2,340m via gondola from Saas-Fee), you get 360-degree panorama - ALL 13 visible plus glaciers, valleys, the works. The Mischabel massif (Dom, Täschhorn, Lenzspitze) dominates south, Allalinhorn and Fee Glacier to the east. The ring of giants is complete - this is why they call Saas-Fee the "Pearl of the Alps." Ride Hannig gondola (check saas-fee.ch for summer 2026 timetables), use the panoramic signage to identify all 13 peaks, count them, photograph the ones you've climbed (if any), photograph the ones you'll never climb (probably all of them).

   🔄 BACKUP: If gondola is closed or weather obscures peaks, ride to Spielboden or Kreuzboden instead - different perspectives, still spectacular multi-peak views.

   Toast the Dom - Switzerland's Highest Mountain (Sort Of)

   The Dom (4,545m) is the highest mountain ENTIRELY within Switzerland - Dufourspitze is technically higher at 4,634m, but straddles the Swiss-Italian border, so nationalists don't count it. The Dom has been here for millions of years, watching glaciers advance and retreat, Walser people arrive, tourists follow. You've been here for days, maybe hours. Order Fendant or Petite Arvine at any wine bar with clear view of the Dom, hold your glass toward the peak, say something quietly like "You win" or "I see you" or nothing at all. The mountain doesn't care, but you'll remember the moment.

   🔄 BACKUP: If Dom is cloud-covered, toast Täschhorn instead (4,491m, second-tallest visible). Or toast all 13 collectively. The point is acknowledging that you're surrounded by altitude that could kill you, and instead you're drinking wine. That's the miracle of civilization.

   Read About the First Ascents - When These Peaks Were Impossible

   Every one of these 13 peaks was "impossible" until someone climbed it. Dom: first ascent 1858 by British vicar and Swiss guides. Täschhorn: 1862. Allalinhorn: 1856. These mountains that look unclimbable from your wine terrace were summited by Victorians in wool suits with hemp ropes - some died trying, most succeeded, all were slightly insane. Research the first ascent history of at least 3 peaks (note the year: most 1850s-1860s Golden Age of Alpinism, note who climbed: usually British gentlemen + local guides, note the equipment: wool, hemp, no oxygen, no weather forecasts), then look at the peaks again from your terrace. They were once genuinely terrifying. Now they're Instagram backgrounds.
