   Carl Zuckmayer - German playwright behind "The Devil's General" - fled Nazi Germany, found refuge in Vermont, then chose THIS village at 1,800m for his final 20 years. He could have lived anywhere after the war. He chose here. His original study is preserved in the Saaser Museum (1732 vicarage in village center): desk, books, the view of 13 four-thousanders that gave him peace after a continent tried to kill him. Enter the museum (CHF 5-8), ask "Where is Carl Zuckmayer's study?" Stand in that room and imagine writing surrounded by mountains that don't care about war or politics. That's why he stayed.

   Trace 100 Years of Skiing from Survival to Carbon Fiber

You're looking at 100+ years of humans figuring out how to slide downhill faster. Inside the museum, find the oldest skis (probably 2+ meters, straight, no side-cut) and compare to modern skis. Ask yourself: "Would I ride these down Allalin?" Answer: no. Walser people did it anyway because they had to.

   Read About Mattmark - When the Glacier Killed 88 People

   August 30, 1965. Allalin glacier tongue collapsed onto Mattmark dam construction site. 2 million m³ of ice buried 88 workers (56 Italian, 23 Swiss, others from across Europe) who built barracks BELOW an unstable glacier. A 2005 investigation revealed those responsible KNEW the risks but courts ignored evidence. The dam finished in 1967, the dead stayed buried. Find the Mattmark panels inside the museum, look for before/after photos, read names if listed - 88 workers who came to build a dam and never went home. This is the cost of Swiss infrastructure.

   🔄 BACKUP: Ask staff about Mattmark. It's seared into Saas Valley memory - they'll direct you to memorials or the dam site (visible from Mittelallalin).

   Toast the Walser Survivors at the Museum Cafe

   You just learned about 800 years of Walser survival at 1,800m - 13th century migrants who brought blockbau architecture, subsistence farming, and a refusal to quit. Now drink the wine their descendants make at any village center cafe or wine bar. Order Fendant (light, aperitif-style) or Petite Arvine (the Valais white that haunts you), ask the server "What's a good Valais white?" and drink it while looking at the mountains. The Walser did this for 800 years before tourism existed. You're continuing the tradition.
