   Find the Workers Memorial

   A memorial plaque honors the 30 Italian workers who died during the 16-year construction (1896-1912). On the train journey up, at Eigerwand station (the train stops briefly), ask the conductor to announce when you're approaching. The plaque is on the tunnel wall - you can see it through the window.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you miss it on the way up, ask the conductor to point it out on the return journey.

   Bring your own bottle of Valais wine (buy in Grindelwald for CHF 15-30) because the restaurant charges 4x markup. At the Sphinx observation deck (3,454m), find the outdoor terrace. Pour a glass. Toast the Italian workers: "Per gli operai." 30 men died so you could stand here.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you forgot wine, the restaurant sells Fendant by the glass (CHF 18) - expensive but memorable.

   Walk Inside the Glacier

   You're inside frozen water that fell as snow centuries ago - workers began carving these tunnels INTO the Aletsch Glacier in 1934. Follow signs to "Ice Palace" from the main hall (included in ticket). Touch the ice walls. The silence is profound.

   🔄 BACKUP: If Ice Palace is crowded, visit at the end of your stay when tour groups have left.
