   🔄 BACKUP: If production isn't happening, visit the aging cellar with 7,000 wheels stacked floor-to-ceiling. The smell alone is worth the trip.

   Hunt the Dynasty That Ruled 500 Years, Then Went Bankrupt

   The Counts of Gruyère built Château de Gruyères in 1270-1282 and ruled massive territories for 5 CENTURIES. Then in 1554, Count Michel went spectacularly BANKRUPT. His creditors — Bern and Fribourg — confiscated everything. A dynasty that lasted 500 years ended in financial ruin. Walk up the steep cobbled main street to the castle at the top, look for the coat of arms showing the crane (Gruyère = 'grue' = crane), and ask at the ticket desk: 'What caused Count Michel's bankruptcy in 1554?' The staff knows the scandal.
