   Descend Into 300-Meter Rock Walls Carved by Ice

   The Grindelwald Glacier has been retreating since 1860. What it left behind is a gorge with walls 300 meters high, a raging turquoise river, and a walkway built into the cliff face where the ice used to be.

   Entry CHF 19/adult to walk where glaciers literally used to press against the rock — the Lütschine River has been carving this gorge since the last Ice Age, using glacier meltwater as a blade. Take bus #122 from Grindelwald station to the Gletscherschlucht stop (Gletscherschlucht 1, 3818 Grindelwald), or walk 35 minutes following brown signs. Go at 9:30am opening or after 4pm to avoid school groups, and wear waterproof layers — the spray is constant and temperature drops 5°C inside the gorge.

   🔄 BACKUP: If the gorge is closed (check grindelwald.swiss — high spring meltwater can force closures), the Trümmelbach Falls near Lauterbrunnen is 30 minutes away and offers the same glacial meltwater drama inside a mountain.

   Count the Years in the Rock Walls Around You

   The layers in these 300-meter walls are readable like tree rings. The Lütschine River is still cutting — by measurable centimeters per year. You're standing inside a slow-motion demolition.

   The walls are limestone compressed for 300 million years, then carved by glacial meltwater for the last 10,000. Press your hand flat against the gorge wall along the 870-meter walkway — it's cold, slightly damp, and older than anything alive. The horizontal layers are geological strata representing thousands of years of ancient seabed that became these Alps. Stop at one of the narrowest points where you can touch both walls at once, press a palm against the rock, count to ten. Notice the coloration changes — each band is a different era.

   Lie on the Spider Web Over 100 Meters of Glacial Roar

   At the far end of the walkway: a 170m² net of thick rope stretched across the gorge. You walk onto it. You sit on it. You lie flat on it. One hundred meters below: the Lütschine racing toward the valley.

   At the far end of the walkway sits a 170-square-meter net of climbing rope stretched horizontally across the canyon void. Step out onto it — the net sags slightly under your weight, confirming there is nothing beneath you except rope and 100 meters of air and then the roaring Lütschine River. Move to the center, sit, then lie back. Look up at the slice of sky between 300-meter walls, listen to the river amplified into white noise by the gorge acoustics. Give yourself three full minutes before standing — the vertigo passes, the awe doesn't.

   🔄 BACKUP: If heights genuinely make you freeze, stand at the edge of the net and look across toward the far wall. Even that view communicates the scale.
