   Built 1898-1900 as a DELUXE tuberculosis sanatorium, the Schatzalp was so luxurious it functioned until 1953 - long after drugs made the "magic mountain" cure obsolete. By 1940, Davos had 40 TB sanatoriums concentrated at 1,560m altitude, where Dr. Alexander Spengler pioneered the "climate cure": hours on sun loungers, fresh air, milk, good food. Nobody knew WHY people recovered, but Davos seemed immune. Board the Art Nouveau funicular at Davos Platz, and as you ascend, count to 1912 - that's when Thomas Mann visited his wife Katia, who was being treated here for TB. He gathered first-hand accounts that became Der Zauberberg (The Magic Mountain), completed 1924.

   Thomas Mann's novel follows Hans Castorp, a young engineer who visits his sick cousin at the TB sanatorium. He stays SEVEN YEARS. The novel isn't about tuberculosis - it's about Europe on the eve of WWI, about intellectuals debating philosophy while death lurks in their lungs. Mann started writing 1913, paused during WWI, completed 1924. By then, the sanatorium world he'd observed in 1912 had been shattered by war. Walk the Belle Epoque corridors inside Hotel Schatzalp, ask reception for the historical sections, and look for framed photos of the sanatorium era - sun loungers on balconies, patients wrapped in blankets. The view over Davos from these windows is the same view Castorp (and Mann) saw.

   The hotel serves "exquisite wines" + afternoon tea with homemade cakes. Mann was RESEARCHING - watching how people behaved when faced with mortality, how intellectuals debated ideas while their bodies failed, how the sanatorium became a microcosm of European civilization. He transformed Katia's illness into literature. Request the wine list at the Schatzalp Terrace Restaurant or Belle Epoque restaurant, look for Bündner Herrschaft producers (Maienfeld, Jenins), and order by the glass. Sit on the terrace (summer) or Belle Epoque lounge (winter) for at least 30 minutes, staring at the view Mann stared at - that's what he did.

   The "cure" wasn't just sun loungers and milk. Patients walked. Slowly. In thin mountain air. The garden behind the hotel was part of therapy - exposure to nature, gentle exercise, the psychological hope that if you could walk today, you might live tomorrow. Robert Louis Stevenson (author of Treasure Island) wintered here in 1880 on his physician's recommendation. Follow the marked paths in the Schatzalp Alpine Botanical Garden. Read plant labels if you're interested, but the REAL experience is imagining yourself as a TB patient in 1912 - weakened, uncertain if you'll live, clinging to the belief that THIS place, THIS altitude, THIS air will save you.
