Walk the Heidi Trail starting at Maienfeld railway station (40 min from Davos). When you reach the vineyards (between town and Heididorf), STOP. Read vineyard signs for producer names (Gantenbein, von Tscharner), touch the chalky soil, and feel the Föhn winds locals call "grape cookers."

   🔄 BACKUP: If weather is bad, skip the trail and go DIRECTLY to a winery tasting room (Schloss Brandis, Weingut Cottinelli). Same wine, less walking.

   The Bündner Herrschaft = 4 villages along Rhine Valley: Maienfeld, Jenins, Malans, Fläsch. ONLY 420 hectares total. Romans planted Pinot Noir here same time as Rhône. The terroir: Föhn winds + dramatic temperature swings + chalky soils = Burgundian-inspired Pinot Noir that Gantenbein charges CHF 282-309/bottle for. Request a tasting flight at Schloss Brandis or Weingut Cottinelli (usually 3-5 wines, CHF 15-30). Start with light Pinot Noir, end with barrique. Ask: "What makes Bündner Herrschaft different from Valais or Vaud?" The answer = Föhn winds.

While she romanticized goat cheese and Alpine meadows, Maienfeld vintners were cultivating Pinot Noir that would eventually rival Burgundy. Visit the Johanna Spyri Museum above the Heididorf shop (CHF 5-8 entry), watch one film clip (1-2 min), then exit and walk BACK to the vineyards. Ask yourself: why did Spyri write about cheese but NOT wine? Answer: she was writing for CHILDREN. The wine was always there. She just chose goats.

   Drink Where the Föhn Winds Cook the Grapes

   The Föhn winds blow from the south, warming the Bündner Herrschaft to become "the warmest wine area in German-speaking Switzerland." Locals call them "grape cookers." You can FEEL them on the Heidihof restaurant terrace - a warm, dry wind that creates this microclimate. Order a glass of Bündner Herrschaft Pinot Noir (any producer on the menu), sit on the terrace, and wait for the Föhn wind. When you feel the warm wind hit your face, take a sip. Connect: wind → grapes → wine → glass. This is terroir you can FEEL.

   🔄 BACKUP: If Föhn isn't blowing (rare), ask the waiter: "When does the Föhn usually come?" They'll tell you the timing - at least you'll understand the science.
