   The 'Oenôthèque du Villa' is the LARGEST Valais wine shop: 780 wines from 120 Valais winemakers, all at CELLAR PRICES (no markup). You can taste and buy wines from the entire appellation system in one visit. At Château de Villa, Sierre (17th-century patrician residence, now wine shop + restaurant, 15 min drive or funicular from Crans-Montana), walk in (no booking needed) and tell staff you want to explore Valais wines. Sierre is called the 'capital of Swiss wine' and hosts the annual VINEA wine fair. Ask: 'Which wines can I ONLY taste in Valais?' They'll steer you to Petite Arvine, Humagne Rouge, Cornalin, Heida. Taste 3-5 wines (€5-10 each), then buy your favorites at cellar prices to take home. The restaurant upstairs serves raclette with 5 cheese varieties if hungry.

   Walk the Steepest Vineyard Terraces in the World

   This trail has 80 explanatory panels covering grape varieties, winemaking history, and the people who created this landscape. The highlight is the Chivirau vineyards — 34 grape varieties you can TOUCH and TASTE (seasonal). The terraces are described as 'among the steepest in the world.' Along the Chemin du Vignoble (Sentier Viticole), a 6km marked trail from Sierre to Salgesch (or reverse), start at Château de Villa or the Salgesch wine museum and walk slowly, reading the panels. At Chivirau, touch the vines (they won't break) and look for the 34 grape variety markers. The path goes through La Raspille gorges (outstanding natural beauty) and ends 2h 15min later. These vineyards only exist because of the bisses (medieval irrigation channels, 11th-12th century) that brought glacier water here.

   🔄 BACKUP: If 6km is too long, just walk the first 2km from Château de Villa to see the steepest terraces. You'll get the idea.

This makes Sierre one of the driest parts of Switzerland, with a steppe-like climate. Anywhere in Sierre, stand in a vineyard or town square and feel the sun (even in winter it's strong). The answer involves the valley's orientation and rain shadow from the Alps. Then realize: this sun is why you're here. No sun = no wine = no trip.
