   Sleep Above the Clouds at Berggasthaus First

   The only way to see Bachalpsee at true sunrise without a 3am village departure. You sleep at 2,200m, accessible only by gondola — there are no roads here.

   When the last cable car descends at 5pm, you have the mountain entirely to yourself at Berggasthaus First (2,200m). 80,000 tourists use this gondola every year; maybe 60 sleep up here. At check-in, ask for the 'sunrise walk' - they'll set coffee ready by 3:45am and leave a door unlocked so you can slip out before dawn. Book direct at berggasthausfirst.ch (approximately CHF 240-250/night), request the east-facing room, and set two alarms for 3:45am.

   🔄 BACKUP: If Berggasthaus is fully booked (reserve 4-6 weeks ahead in summer), the 3am departure from Grindelwald village gives you the full 2.5-hour night hike - harder but arguably more earned.

   Walk the Dark Trail to Discover the Lake Has Two Faces

   The 45-minute trail from First to Bachalpsee in near-darkness — stars, cowbells, your headlamp pool. Here's the thing nobody tells you: there are actually TWO lakes.

   You're hiking in complete darkness with extraordinary stars at this altitude, somewhere cowbells in the black, your world a small circle of light and gravel crunch. Then water appears - but here's what photographers know and guidebooks skip: the lake is split by a natural dam. The UPPER Bachalpsee creates the big reflections, while six meters below, the LOWER section gives you a completely different Schreckhorn angle. Two mirrors, one dawn. Leave at 4:00am and arrive 20 minutes before first light to choose your position.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you're coming from the village (no overnight stay), start at 3am from Grindelwald Grund - 2.5 hours, 1,200m elevation gain in legitimate darkness.

   Position on the East Shore Before the World Sees Pink

   This is the moment everything was for. The Wetterhorn turns blush. Then coral. Then fire. And it's happening twice — once in the sky, once in the water at your feet.

   When alpenglow hits, the sequence is exact: pale pink along summit ridges, deepening to coral, then igniting into full orange-gold. The Wetterhorn catches it first, then the Schreckhorn. If the water is still, you see it twice - once real, once reflected. Don't talk, don't photograph for the first three minutes. Let your eyes adjust before reducing it to a screen rectangle. Position yourself on the east shore facing west toward the peaks.

   🔄 BACKUP: If wind creates ripples, the reflection won't form - but the alpenglow on peaks still happens, extraordinary without the doubling.

   Toast the Sunrise with Something You Carried Up

   The best wine you'll ever open is the one you carried 2,265 meters in a daypack. The Bernese Oberland tradition of 'mountain drinking' is older than the gondola.

   The wine you carried matters - ideally a Swiss Chasselas from Lavaux (UNESCO World Heritage vineyard, 2 hours away), crisp and mineral, built for altitude. Pack a half-bottle and two lightweight cups the night before. Open after the full alpenglow sequence - arrive, watch, be silent, then celebrate. The ritual matters more than the label.

   🔄 BACKUP: Berggasthaus First serves wine from 11am onward (CHF 12-15/glass), or buy Swiss wine at Grindelwald's Coop (Dorfstrasse, open 7:30am) for the gondola descent views.
