Built in the 1st century AD under Emperor Trajan, this 2,000-year-old theatre still hosts concerts and plays today — Sting performed here, and opera festivals happen annually. The Roman Theatre of Philippopolis (Hemus St, Old Town hill, entry ~10 leva) is one of the world's best-preserved Roman theatres with a capacity of 5,000-7,000. Climb to the top tier seats and test the acoustics: whisper from the stage while a friend listens from above — Romans engineered perfect sound. Check the performance schedule posted at entrance, and if possible, attend an evening concert where you'll drink wine where Romans did when Plovdiv was already 5,500 years old.
